Tips from the EFT Website

  • Suicidal client helped over the phone.: Peggy Olson shares with us this experience with a suicidal client. Please note that this work was done over the phone. The client was suicidal at the moment and thus waiting for a future appointment may have been too late. I know some practitioners hesitate to use EFT over the phone because it is "more appropriate" to do this in an in-person office environment. However, in this case, a decision to wait could have been a fatal one. Just something to think about.
  • Shyness and Stuttering.: Thanks to Susan Gilbert for taking a deeper look into this issue. In her words, "... even though the gamut may not be a necessary part of tapping, it helped me diagnose the possible "social phobia", which is an actual DSM-IV diagnostic category. Thanks for the Miracles!!"
  • Client collapses asthma, rage, a height phobia and an allergy to bed feathers in one EFT session: Ramona Wagner from Germany provides this important case that started with asthma and ended with the relief of several other issues. It illustrates several EFT principles: (1) physical issues are often contributed to by unresolved emotional issues, (2) you can collapse an issue without having that issue present at the moment and (3) sometimes we get unexpected positive side effects.
  • Touching trichotillomania tale: At a trichotillomania retreat, one person willing to try EFT on a stranger made an important breakthough. The fact that they were both involved in the same retreat undoubtedly created some rapport, which is always a necessary ingredient, but the person applying the EFT used some very sharp intuition and got to the heart of the problem quickly. Here is the story...
  • A question for digging deep: Helping people becomes more difficult when they tend to repress or "can't connect" with some past issue. I have a favorite question I use in this case. I explore it in the response that follows this letter.
  • Rachel's dyslexia and a problem with straight lines: Rachel told me she had a lifelong problem writing numbers and drawing lines, but she also had a significant problem looking at a corner where three walls came together. By starting with the corner, which was something that was easy to reproduce in the moment, and tapping on her related discomfort, we opened up a surprising core issue from her past. This is, of course, what we hope for in every case, regardless of where we start.
  • Emergency uses for EFT: In an emergency room, where stress levels are high, there are plenty of opportunities to make a difference with EFT. However, the original spots aren't always available for tapping, so creativity can come in handy. Here are two examples, one of which involves some spur-of-the-moment surrogate work.
  • Using EFT with frail people.: Member Beverly Schydlowsky shares this experience using EFT with a 90 year old, frail, lady. As you read this account, please note the remarkable improvement in the client's energy. This should not be too surprising since the theory behind EFT involves the blockage or disruption of the free flow in someone's energy system. Balancing it would likely bring about this improvement. Also, one need not be old to be frail. Many people have diseases which sap their energy. EFT might be useful in these cases. Be sure to consult their doctors first, though.
  • Alan--a mentally retarded client.: Tom Altaffer shares this story about Alan, who had fallen down some stairs and then refused to walk. His mental challenges made the process more difficult, but Tom had enough history with Alan to maintain good rapport. After only 20 minutes of tapping, Alan was showing noticeable improvement. As Tom recalls, "He stood up, dashed upstairs, came down and stood ready to leave. There was a long silence in the room."
