Progress with tinnitus

Hi Everyone,

David Moore, a colleague of EFT Contributing Editor Tam Llewellyn of the UK, discusses his progress with a tinnitus case (ringing in the ears).

As background, please note several important items pertaining to this article...

1.  Tinnitus, to date, has not responded as well to EFT as have other ailments.  There have been some noticeable improvements but, in most cases, they are short lived.

2.  This does NOT mean that we should discard tinnitus from our "EFT list of possibilities."  On the contrary, tinnitus often responds to EFT, at least temporarily.  Further, it is better than most any other intervention I know of.  This is glaring evidence that something good is happening and thus the dedicated healing professional should keep trying new approaches until better results are achieved.

3.  These "tough cases" are opportunities to expand our skills.  They are our best classrooms and separate the EFT Masters from the EFT mechanics.  We are sometimes spoiled by our "one minute wonders" and are thus tempted to turn our back on "tough" ailments like MS, schizophrenia, tinnitus, etc. simply because EFT doesn't provide instant cures for them.  It is important to note that we have reports of progress in all these areas...but persistence and dedication is required.

Also, please note that David Moore is an experienced therapist but is a newcomer to EFT (9 months experience).  I spoke with him on the phone and discussed several other avenues of approach for his tinnitus client including....

1.  Exploring what emotional events may have surrounded the onset of his tinnitus.

2.  Being more specific on the more current emotional events that he DID address.

3.  Exploring in more detail what caused the temporary cessation of his client's tinnitus.  Playing detective here can open up wide doors because, indeed, the tinnitus went to zero temporarily as a result of EFT.  What is REALLY happening and WHY did the tinnitus re-appear.  These answers may not be readily apparent but if we don't explore this obvious avenue, we may never find the answer.

So read on and notice the successes and "failures" involved in this case.  See if you can't find new avenues to explore.  It would be a useful exercise.

Hugs, Gary

P.S.  I have high regard for David's persistence in this case.  It led him to a useful level of success...albeit not a cure....with his client.

I am sure that most of you will be aware that Tinnitus (ringing in ears) is considered by most doctors to be virtually incurable, and the treatment success depends on the severity of the problem. I work in the construction industry which has it's fair share of noise that either deafens you or can cause tinnitus. Thankfully legislation and commonsense now makes provision for this, but for some it is too late.

A friend with whom I served my apprenticeship is one of those unfortunates. I happened to meet "Pete's" wife one day and asked how he was as I hadn't seen him for a couple of years. After hearing how he was suffering with acute tinnitus I told her I would come round the next day to see if I could help. I am a reiki master and had been 'toying' with EFT for about 4 months so thought I may be able to help him.

On talking to Pete the next day it seemed he had not only ringing in his ears but he also had what he described as a 'steam valve' blowing off in his ear constantly. I decided to try and help him using EFT and on asking he told me he had an intensity on a 0-10 scale of 10+.

I used the basic setup specifically for the tinnitus, using "Although I have this tinnitus I deeply and completely accept myself" and actually got him down to a 3 after about half an hour of tapping. Incidentally he had been having acupuncture previously with limited success and I actually got better results with EFT after one session than he experienced through acupuncture.

Although, as Gary has stated, success tends to be temporary in his experience of treating tinnitus. I gave him a copy of the EFT manual and guided him through the technique so he could carry on by himself. On returning two days later I found he was back to 'normal', steam valve blowing and all.

Pete was very down and believed there was no cure.  Thus my treatments were not regular at first and he actually attempted suicide as a cry for help. His wife rang me and asked if I would return which I gladly did and explained that he needed regular therapy to gain some improvement.

After trying EFT again I found I couldn't make any difference at all, probably due to my inexperience, so I decided in my wisdom to give him a reiki attunement so he could do self healing. I rang him the next day to see how he was doing and found he was having horrific cleansing from the attunement, giving him panic attacks.

On returning the next day I spent two hours working through his issues causing his panic attacks. All his issues were guilt issues tied into, "I should have supported my son more when he lost his contract" (his son plays professional soccer and had not had his contract renewed), "I should have spent more time with my children when they were younger", "I should have helped my wife more instead of going out drinking".

These were really upsetting issues for him, but after the session he had eliminated the panic attacks and feelings of guilt, although he still had the tinnitus. I returned two days later and he told me he had been watching his niece at her school play and felt guilty that he didn't see much of her, so we tapped for that also.

During the various sessions I once managed to get him to a 0 but nothing lasted and I was starting to think I wasn't doing any good at all and I was running out of ideas and realised I needed another approach.

I decide to try the Choices approach and we tapped on "Although I have this tinnitus, I choose not to feel the effects of it". Although Pete still has the tinnitus and probably has too much damage to his ears to make a permanent difference, when I spoke to him next day he was much more accepting of his condition and was able to live with it. Although others say you do learn to live with it, his effect was overnight and I feel that it was the result of EFT I am sure as I get more experienced that I will return and make further improvements. I certainly hope so.

Although with EFT I have not cured his Tinnitus, he is able to get on with his life and return to work. From being suicidal he has at least got back part of his life and certainly more than he would have otherwise. So it is still a positive result and shows that even if there is no cure there is still hope of improvement in Quality of life. After all, it is not just how long we live but how we are able to live.

Important note: While EFT has produced remarkable clinical results, it must still be considered to be in the experimental stage and thus practitioners and the public must take complete responsibility for their use of it. Further, Gary Craig is not a licensed health professional and offers EFT as an ordained minister and as a personal performance coach. Those who want to discuss the use of EFT for a specific emotional or physical problem with a professional in the health field are referred to our Referral section, where a number of licensed and unlicensed practitioners who use EFT in their practices are listed.  Where appropriate, qualified physicians should be consulted.
