Tracing core issues back to the birth process

Hi Everyone,

I have often found that a difficult-to-discover core issue can be revealed if you go back to the moment of birth (or, for that matter, pre-birth womb experiences). Marian Mills has also experienced this and gives us some important insights in this well written article.

Hugs, Gary

Dear Gary,

I would like to share what I’ve learned about myself and others through working back to the earliest memories of present-day issues.  When we think of memories, we usually start recalling actual events from age 4 or 5.  But I have worked with clients where they have spontaneously recalled their own birth.  Birth is an extremely important time for us all and there have been several cases where we managed to trace the origins of a problem back to something that was said … or done … or felt just before, during or shortly after birth.

One client, who had intense fear about traveling along roads where there was open space on either side, spontaneously recalled her birth.  Her mother’s midwife didn’t believe that the birth had progressed as far as it actually had.  When the mother said that she felt ready to push, the midwife told her in no uncertain terms that this was not a good idea.  My client recalled feeling the pressure building up and then suddenly she was out and almost falling onto the floor.  The midwife was upset and angry and shouted at the mother, scaring both mother and baby.  The parallel between the open space of the hospital room after the confines of the womb and birth passage and the open spaces around roads was very clear to the client.

For myself, I was born through emergency caesarean in the 1960’s.  My mother’s intense feelings of not being good enough, her fear of the pain, and not understanding what was happening, became a part of my belief system.  I used to reckon that if you cut me anywhere it would read “I can’t do it” inside.  And that is just what my mother felt giving birth to me and what I felt being birthed!

When working through this recently with EFT, I also encountered strong feelings of not wanting to do EFT on my own.  I believe this again stemmed from birth, believing that I always needed help from someone else and was incapable of doing it for myself.  It wasn’t until I was in my mid 40’s that I actually completed my birth process and was able to feel fully present and committed to this life.

Other clients have had strings of disastrous relationships where they have felt abandoned repeatedly.  Through EFT they remember that they were separated from their parents shortly after birth.  It was common practice in many hospitals to remove the baby to be left overnight in the ‘baby room’, sometimes because their mother needed medical attention, but also because it was believed that was best for mother and baby at the time.  This early separation at a crucial time, seems to have written fundamental beliefs on their walls in a big way.

A client who had weight issues was doing EFT and recalled a casual comment from a midwife who was weighing her after birth and seemed to be complaining that she didn’t weigh enough.  Another client struggled with many issues because someone had told her mother that she wasn’t expected to live for long.

I sometimes ask clients directly about their birth circumstances, but mostly these revelations come as spontaneous memories or as ideas that can’t be discounted because they have a ring of truth to them.  Sometimes, if an early relevant memory appears to contain an already formed belief, I may ask the client to tap for Even though I may not remember what happened when I was born, I am willing to release any contributing emotions or beliefs from that time.

Birth is such an important time that we really need to be so careful of what is said at this sensitive time: we are very open to whatever happens around us and it can get written directly onto our walls.

Hugs,

Marian Mills, EFT-ADV
