When clients can’t access emotions that may have contributed to physical problems

Hi Everyone,

Some clients have a difficult time understanding that emotions are often big contributors to physical symptoms. This is especially so when the symptoms appear to be caused by a 'strictly physical' injury. Stephanie Wood from Canada shows us how she handles this problem and gives us ways to find the contributing emotions.

Hi Gary,

Some time ago, Silvia Hartmann-Kent posted about the direct use of the word "information" with respect to symptoms as a means to access deeper issues.  I have been using this idea with clients and am finding it to be a useful approach.  There is something neutral about the concepts of information, reason and purpose that appeals to some clients who have difficulty with the notion that there could be emotions contributing to their physical pain.

Here is an example of how it might be used with a client who has shoulder pain due to a "strictly physical” injury.  This approach seems to help when a client has difficulty accessing memories or emotions that may have contributed to the problem.  After doing some initial work on the physical pain alone, I use set up statements such as these:

Even though I have this shoulder pain and I don't know what is causing it...

Even though I might have this shoulder pain for a reason but I don't know what that is... Even though this shoulder pain might have some information for me, I choose to acknowledge this and hear it on some level, consciously or subconsciously...

Even though I may have needed this shoulder pain in the past, I am now ready to let it go...

Even though this shoulder pain has served some purpose, I choose to now know this on some level, consciously or subconsciously...

Even though I have this stupid shoulder pain, I forgive myself and anyone else who may have contributed to this pain...

This last statement often opens things up for clients.  Also, depending on the dynamics between us, I will often use humour and slang.  It is wonderful to get clients laughing and shifting their perceptions about the nature of their pain.  While tapping the points, I use phrases such as:

This shoulder pain

It's telling me something

Information in my shoulder

It has served a purpose

I don't know what it is

I don't need to know

It's OK not to know

Maybe it's OK to know

All the information in my shoulder

I'm ready to let it all go

It's served a purpose

And now I can move on

I don't need to take this out on my body any more

I'm ready to look at it directly

Everything that is in my shoulder

Everything that it means

I honour it and let it go

Time and time again, this process has brought up old memories that the client had not connected with the current injury.  Once the memories and old emotions emerge, then they are right there at your fingertips to deal with directly.

Thank you for developing EFT, Gary.  It has changed my life and all of the people that I have had the privilege of treating!

With love,

Stephanie Wood, EFT-ADV
