Stepping back from the movie in the EFT Movie Technique
Hi Everyone,
Stewart Robertson from the UK offers this innovation to our popular EFT Movie Technique. He uses some advanced therapy concepts in this article and thus it will likely have its largest appeal to seasoned professionals.
Hugs, Gary
This simple method is especially helpful when people are too intense to even consider using the Movie Technique. It is also useful to take the edge off any fight or flight state, or their resistance to even "go there".
First, visually dissociate the client from the traumatic scene in the usual way. Instruct the client to see him or her self, over there, in the picture. Make sure they are far enough away from the scene to feel completely at ease. At this stage they could be in the next room, down the street, or even the next town over.
Next ask the client in their imagination to take one or two paces closer to that version of them in the scene, and ask what comes up for them, or, more specifically, "What aspect about stepping into that younger you feels most intense now?"
Your client could feel intensity about emotions about the thought of reliving the trauma … emotions about the trauma itself, or … a physical discomfort. Look for any or all of these, although personally I like to eliminate all aspects of the thought of reliving the trauma first.
At any rate, stomp out all aspects of whatever comes up with EFT. Shift aspects if necessary, then return back to the original aspects later and check them again, for a thorough job. Once again, instruct the client to take another pace or two closer to that version of themselves, there in the picture, and tap out whatever comes up. Repeat this process until client is comfortable stepping into his or her own body all the way.
Then, go through the Movie Technique in the normal way, applying EFT to ALL aspects of the actual movie. Many times you will find that the levels of intensity on the movie content itself are substantially reduced already, before you even begin tapping on it. In the usual way, make sure you point this out to your client.
If your client does inadvertently go into fight/flight, use heartmath breathing or continuous tapping all over, or using your fingers, direct clients' gaze upwards for a few moments, moving your fingers from left to right and back again (useful NLP quickie to take client out of feelings mode and into visual mode, away from overwhelm)
With love and blessings from sunny Glasgow,
Stewart
