Persistence with EFT despite the appearance of abreactions
Hi Everyone,
People bring all kinds of emotions and reactions into an EFT session and some of these can be extreme. Generally speaking, EFT newcomers should avoid such extreme cases until they have more experience. Ted Robinson is a seasoned EFT'er and shares with us how he handles a case with an unusual reaction.
Hugs, Gary
Hi Gary,
I had Jack (not his name) come in for a second visit. In his first visit he informed me he was 48 and still living with his mother. The reason was his mother threatened to castrate him after catching him touching his genitals at age 5 and she added that if he ever impregnated a woman she would do the same to him. It so frightened him that he never touched himself or a woman again … until a few months after our first session.
As background, he also tried to move out of his parents' home, but at the last minute "chickened out" and had a strange thing happen simultaneously. He noticed a facial tic which was very significant. I asked him to demonstrate and it looked like Tourette Syndrome in that his whole head went back and his mouth made strange monstrous sounds.
His present concern for coming back was he wanted to now move out because he had just had his first experience of intercourse with a woman and wanted to bring her back to his place in the future, but had no place of his own. He was also afraid of what people would think of him if he left his mother now because she was now disabled and otherwise alone.
We started with a round on his resistance to change, which turned into his fears about what others might think of him, which turned into his anger towards his mother. It progressed through a full round on his anger and then finished with choices and how he now chose to find his own apartment.
That's when the head tics started in earnest. I was somewhat concerned about a possible abreaction, so I stopped and explained that he had to agree to follow my directions to the letter. He agreed. I then centered myself and off we went. The more I suggested that he say, "Its MY choice to move" and "There's nothing you can do about it", the more the noises emanated from him.
I had to remind myself to stay centered and not to be frightened because from my experience, that would not serve either of us. I simply tapped him as I continued to have him say louder and louder, "Its my choice to move out of here". Eventually, the noise and tics subsided, but it was a very challenging experience. I also reminded him to just stay with the emotions as we went through the episode.
At the end he was very much released from what was holding him back and he was wet from sweat, but very happy and relieved.
Hope this is helpful. Don't know, but just wanted to share it with you. Again, thanks for everything.
Much love,
Ted
