Scary commercials

Hi Gary,

Your creation of a special section for and about children on your website is fabulous. I applaud your idea and hope hundreds, maybe thousands, contribute their stories.

Mine is a simple one. I noticed that my 7-yr-old grandson ran out of the room every time a particular commercial came on his cartoon station. I asked him how come and he first just pretended to stick his finger down his throat and told me the commercial was "stupid." But I thought his behavior indicated a stronger emotion so I pressed further. Finally he swallowed hard and admitted, "It's scary. I hate it."

I said, "Well, there are some things you could do about this. (1) You could mute the sound, but then you'd have to watch to see when the commercial was over. (2) You could turn off the TV completely, but then you'd miss your cartoons. (3) You could tap away the 'stupid scariness'. Which one do you think would help the most."

"Show me." So I did.

We tapped, "Even though I hate that stupid scary commercial, I love myself." Pretty soon he was laughing. So I asked, "Is all the stupid scariness gone."

"No. But now I have just enough."

"What does that mean?"

"Well, I really need to hate it just a little, Grandma. I certainly don't want to start LIKING the stupid thing!"

Needless to say, he hasn't run from that commercial since. But what I especially treasure about this interaction is the way my grandson stopped short of eradicating his negative reaction entirely in order to retain good judgment about it's poor quality. It just as you said, EFT will never make us "stupid."

GC COMMENT: In my experience, you could have continued tapping and it still would not have taken away his good judgment.
