Hi Everyone,
Alex Lugo is a student of EFT Researcher, Harvey Baker, PhD and gives us this first hand account of what it is like to have his fear of public speaking vanish. As he applies EFT he says, "As I continued, I slowly felt the knot in my stomach uncoil. This was an unfamiliar feeling and so I continued to use EFT until I felt myself at ease. After five rounds of EFT, I felt my level of confidence increase..."

Growing up as a child, I struggled with my academics, maintaining mediocre grades. My family would constantly ridicule me by referring to me as "stupid". As a result, I started believing that I was dumb and that it was impossible for me to learn. This led to a sense of insecurity about my intelligence, which later developed into anxiety. My anxiety restricted me from adequately expressing myself before my peers during presentations. After trying different ways to control my anxiety, I decided to use Emotional Freedom Techniques (EFT).
During my first semester at Queens College, I took Introduction to Clinical Psychology with Dr. Harvey Baker who offered me the chance to serve as a volunteer Research Assistant in his lab. He briefly discussed his study on EFT which dealt with reducing levels of anxiety due to fear of small animals. After having learned about this research, I decided to present a report about EFT in my research class.
The day of my presentation, I kept reviewing my slides since early that morning. Because I was so anxious about making an oral report in front of people, I hadn't slept the night before. With all the research that I had done, I felt that I mastered my topic but I still questioned my ability to articulate my ideas. I decided to review one last time reciting the words "Emotional Freedom Techniques" over and over. As I repeated the same three words a hundred times, I was struck by an idea. I thought to myself "Why not actually apply the EFT procedure to my fear of public speaking?"
I walked into the experimental room in our lab and reviewed the EFT procedures. I began by visualizing myself giving the speech and started experiencing my usual physical symptoms -- sweating, dry mouth, and nausea. I then began tapping on the meridian points with my finger tips while concentrating on my fear of public speaking. I also repeated self accepting statements while continuously tapping. As I continued, I slowly felt the knot in my stomach uncoil. This was an unfamiliar feeling and so I continued to use EFT until I felt myself at ease. After five rounds of EFT, I felt my level of confidence increase and hoped it would last throughout my presentation.
As I sat in class, I felt extremely relaxed and no levels of anxiety were present. I began to worry about why I wasn't feeling terribly anxious, as I always did during my all earlier oral reports. I was third to present; and by now I should have felt my anxiety building up. As I began my presentation, I noticed that I was relaxed and not running through my slides as I had always done in the past. Instead, I described every bullet in detail and even encouraged my peers to ask questions. Before, I had always looked away from my audience, staring at my slides; now I looked at my audience. I had the incredible feeling for someone that had battled anxiety for so many years. After my presentation, I stood in the rain for a few seconds realizing I had overcome my fear of public speaking.
I was very surprised. I had thought that I would need much more advanced training in EFT before I would be able to use it on myself and see any effects.
