Dear Gary,
I recently received a phone call from the mother of a 13 year old girl, "Sally," who had a serious fear of vomiting (emetophobia). This problem had nearly taken over her daughter's life and her own life as well, with daily phone calls from the girl at school, panicked that something she smelled or saw would cause her to throw up. Sally had been to an out-of-state treatment facility for a month last year and had acquired many coping skills to deal with her fear, but was often not able to apply them on her own. She had sleepless nights worrying about becoming nauseous, and she didn't like going out of the house for very long.
When we met, Sally was very quiet, but anxious to try EFT. I tried to tease out an early memory that might have brought this on, but all she could say was that she'd always had it. Even talking about it took her intensity up to 9 on a scale of 0 to 10. So we did some general tapping.
Even though I have this fear of throwing up, I don't know why...
Even though I hate throwing up, everybody does...
Even though I think throwing up is so disgusting...
That general tapping round brought her down from an 8 to a 4 on a scale of 0 to 10, then another round brought her down to a 2 out of 10. I had her imagine going into the girls' bathroom at school which always provoked panicked phone calls to her mom. She could only get her intensity up to a 5 out of 10, which she thought was very odd. So we tapped.
Even though I should be getting more upset thinking about going into the girls' bathroom, it's disgusting in there and I might throw up...
Even though who knows what will happen if I throw up, it's too scary to think about, maybe I'll die...
Even though I can't stay in the bathroom with all those smells, I might throw up and that would be horrible...
After just two rounds Sally said she didn't have any concern about throwing up at all. "I can't even imagine having a fear of throwing up! It all seems so silly now," is what she said. We tested the result by talking about some really revolting things that would have sent her into a frenzy before; but as hard as we tried, she couldn't work up any intensity at all. Her mother was amazed it could be so easy. The family had spent $2500 (plus the thousands the insurance company had paid) sending her to the treatment center, and she was cured in 45 minutes with EFT!
It's been two months now, and I just called to check in with Sally. Her mother reports that Sally has no symptoms, and is living the life of a normal 13 year old.
We all know how important specificity is, Gary, but this was a great reminder for me of how powerful EFT can be even when there's not much specific to go on.
GC COMMENT: Indeed, specific events are almost always useful ... but not always available. Let me suggest, however, that tapping on the experience of going into the girl's bathroom may have substituted as a specific event or reminded her of a specific event in the past. I've seen this sort of thing happen many times.
