Abstract
The purpose of this study was to compare Emotional Freedom Techniques (EFTĂ´) to Diaphragmatic Breathing for the reduction of anxiety associated with specific phobias. Anxiety was measured using three methods: Subjective Units of Distress Scale (SUD), Beck Anxiety Inventory (BAI), and a behavioral approach test. A within-subjects counter-balanced crossover design was used with each of the 22 participants getting both treatments. When Diaphragmatic Breathing was administered before EFT, it produced a statistically significant decrease in anxiety as measured by the SUD but not by the BAI or Approach Test. When Diaphragmatic Breathing was administered after EFT, it produced no significant changes. EFT produced statistically significant reductions in anxiety as measured by all three tests regardless of whether it was administered before or after Diaphragmatic Breathing.
