EFT with a mentally retarded patient

Hi Everyone,

We can all learn from this touching case sent by Tom Altaffer. Here, EFT is applied to a non-verbal, mentally retarded patient. A first class healing took place because Tom and his friend were dedicated and willing to "Try It On Everything." Here's how Tom tells it. My comments are in [brackets].

Dear Gary,

We thought you would like to hear about a recent EFT treatment with a mentally retarded individual which was quite dramatic.

Ken is a profoundly retarded man with autistic symptoms who is living in a developmental center. My friend and I were asked to come see him because he was biting on his arms and the doctor was considering restraining his arms to keep him from doing more damage. When we saw him, both arms were red with scabs and the yellow orange ointment the nurse had applied to disinfect the wounds. He was sucking on his thumbs and whenever he would attempt to bite his arms a staff would intervene.

Apparently Ken has a long history of this biting behavior, and historically, whenever it got bad the doctors had to write an order to restrain his arms until they could heal. When we asked what Ken would do then we were told "he cries".

Because he is non-verbal, we decided to use EFT to treat him. The treatment was done by my friend and co-worker. We began with the reversal correction, tapping the side of his hand and saying "I accept myself even though I bite my arms". Since he was non-verbal, my friend said the affirmation for him.

GC COMMENT: Good creativity. I find this often works when the client is so upset s/he cannot speak.

Then he did the series (tapping for him), then the 9 gamut (in which my friend tapped and did the procedures himself for the client).

GC COMMENT: More creativity. Where necessary, we can sometimes "stand in" for the client and perform the procedures on ourselves as a surrogate.

After getting through the series one time Ken was laughing. We did not know whether to do it again, so we said to Ken "If you would like us to do it again, just put your hand in (my friends) hand". He did so and we did the series again. This time Ken laughed when we did the reversal correction. He thought it funny that my friend was saying "I accept myself even though I still want to bite my arms"!

GC COMMENT: Excellent! One minor point, though. It is technically more correct to say, "I accept myself even though I still have some of this arm biting problem left."

It has been a full week now since the treatments and Ken has not attempted to bite his arms. They are healing nicely. If he starts again, staff has been told to call us.

We are starting to get some more stories like this one, but this was so dramatic, I thought it should be posted.

You can use my name. Ken is not really the other person's name so go ahead!
