Talking to Christians About EFT

Important Note: This article was written prior to 2010 and is now outdated. Please use my newest advancement, Optimal EFT. It is more efficient, more powerful and clearly explained in my free e-book, The Unseen Therapist™.  Best wishes, Gary

Hi Everyone,

This is an unusual article because I rarely feature religious views. Why? Because I have no interest in "taking sides" on religious matters. However, EFT can be perceived to conflict with certain religious views and these perceptions can stand in the way of accepting EFT and its healing possibilities. That's why I am including this article by Gina Parris who says, "...I share a slight variation of EFT that I find effective with those who consider themselves Christian and who want to stay congruent with their Biblical beliefs.  These same precious people are often very wary of things that strike them as too "New Age," or "Eastern," and instead of getting annoyed with them, it is helpful to speak their own language.  I will include Scripture references at the end of the article."

One of the most beautiful things about the Emotional Freedom Technique is Gary Craig's generosity to share it across different circles of people.

It is in this spirit that I share a slight variation of EFT that I find effective with those who consider themselves Christian and who want to stay congruent with their Biblical beliefs.  These same precious people are often very wary of things that strike them as too "New Age," or "Eastern," and instead of getting annoyed with them, it is helpful to speak their own language.  I will include Scripture references at the end of the article.

Here are some keys that I use regularly as a business coach. Overall, I de-mystify the process by saying we are simply doing three things:

Acknowledging our distress,
Offering acceptance or forgiveness and,
Creating an empowering choice.  The choice is a nod towards "free will" which is a huge element of the Christian faith.

Here's how I explain why it works: I point to the "finished work" of redemption.  I explain that when Jesus died on the cross, and spoke, "It is finished," he paid the price for sin and every evil thing that sin brought into the world.  In fact, when seeing what it means to be "redeemed from the curse of the law," we can see that this includes everything- spirit, soul, body, and material abundance.

There is a verse that says, "Let God be true and every man a liar." This means that just because provision has been made for every thing good in abundance, our own upbringing can have us programmed to believe a non-truth.  Also, sometimes our physical body just gives us symptoms that are not in line with Truth.  Ultimately, "According to your faith it is unto you."

Consider the tapping as a form of "laying hands on yourself" to speak to all you've heard, seen, said, believed, and done in relation to your specific issue. You are choosing now to take authority and "re-train your senses."

For this reason I use targets that relate to the ear, eye, upper lip, lower lip, heart (collarbone), and wrists. I know this does not hit all the "meridians" but I always get the results I'm after –very often only with having the clients simply put their hand on their heart as we go along. The power seems to lie in intuitively identifying the client's core issues and naming them as we go along.  This is an element of just being led as we work.

Create a choice that is congruent with Truth.

In applying the choices method, you can always create a Biblical choice. For example:

Even though I am afraid of being rejected, I love myself anyway, and I choose to receive God's Grace and Favor…

Even though I don't think I deserve to be rich, I love myself anyway and I thank God for the ability to produce wealth.

In the end, the beauty is the ability to take a formerly stressful trigger and turn it into a faith-builder. I hope this helps.  For those who like Scriptural support, here are some good ones to look up:

John 19:30
When he had received the drink, Jesus said, "It is finished." With that, he bowed his head and gave up his spirit.

Galatians 3:13
Christ redeemed us from the curse of the law by becoming a curse for us, for it is written: "Cursed is everyone who is hung on a tree."

John 10:10
The thief comes only to steal and kill and destroy; I have come that they may have life, and have it to the full.

1 Peter 2:24
He himself bore our sins in his body on the tree, so that we might die to sins and live for righteousness; by his wounds you have been healed.

Deuteronomy 28:1-68
(Blessings and curses related to the Law)

Romans 3:4
Not at all! Let God be true, and every man a liar.

Deuteronomy 8:18
But remember the LORD your God, for it is he who gives you the ability to produce wealth, and so confirms his covenant, which he swore to your forefathers, as it is today.
