An unsuccessful case regarding peformance in English class

A thank you to Carole Kinsey who shares with us an unsuccessful case (to date) regarding behavior and performance in English class. As of this writing, Carole is relatively new to these procedures but discerns (I think correctly) that she has not yet discovered and addressed the core issue. I make comments at the end which I hope will be helpful.

Dear Gary,

I am working with a 16 year old called Andrew. I do not have a sparkling story to tell you like some of the things you report - but you said you wanted them all so.......

Andrew is diagnosed ADD but the label is not a problem for him. He is an adopted boy, very bright and intelligent with loving parents - South African and English. Andrew and his brother came from Chile. He is at a private school where he gets lots of attention and enjoys some subjects and does very well including Latin. Others he finds difficulty with and does not believe he can succeed - especially English. Also he dislikes the English teacher. His main problem is motivation with these subjects and a very strong away-from tendency.

I have been working with Andrew on his limiting beliefs and did some tapping to change them. He found the process amusing and burst out laughing as he said it tickled! I worked with him for 2 weeks on his belief that he was (not) a super student and that he could enjoy English. So far, I have not seen any discernible results and last week, his behaviour in English deteriorated. I know the process works but perhaps I am not at the root cause.

GC COMMENT: I wish we could report 100% success on everything that we do but, alas, such perfection has eluded us. However, others have reported success in similar situations so I think your thought of not being at the root cause has merit.

My first thought here is to discover why he doesn't like the English teacher. Chances are the English teacher is triggering (perhaps unknowingly) some past issues that are unresolved. These can be very subtle. A tone of voice, an often used phrase or a routine gesture by the teacher can set off conditioned responses (anchors in NLP) within Andrew that are turning him off to the teacher and thus English. Such issues often carry great potency with them and, if discovered and resolved, might even help reduce his ADD.

Also, you might ask one of my favorite questions, namely, "What does this difficulty in English remind you of?" That question has been very helpful to me in leading to core issues in the past. It has often taken me right to the boil beneath the surface.
