Dear Gary,

I work as the principal’s secretary at a large public elementary school (500+ students, ages 5-11).  During the course of any day, there are almost always a few students who get sent to the office for behavior issues.  Sometimes teachers will send a student for a time-out rather than to see the principal; in such cases, the student sits in a small, partially enclosed area called a “cubby.”  There are two such spots for time-out, which happen to share a common wall with the principal’s office.

A student who is very upset may literally be “kicking and screaming” when dropped off for a time-out.  Being so close to the action, I decided to try surrogate tapping when students are crying, yelling, or kicking the wall as they sit in a cubby trying to calm down.  On at least three occasions, I have gone into the principal’s office (only if she’s not in there, of course) and stood next to the wall that has the cubbies on the other side.

I pretend I am the child who is crying, yelling, and/or kicking and start tapping while saying to myself, Even though I’m really upset … so mad … can’t stop crying… or whatever seems to fit.  If the child is saying or yelling anything (they are easily heard through the wall), I just use his or her own words.  Interestingly, I find the very act of tapping makes it easy to enter their emotional world and channel their feelings.  In every case, the student has almost immediately calmed down, and one particularly hysterical little boy actually curled up on the floor and fell asleep!

I don’t know what I’d say if anyone ever walked in on me doing my stealth tapping (they’d probably ask me if I need a time-out in the cubby), but I haven’t been caught so far.  I’ve also tapped on behalf of upset students and adults by surreptitiously tapping the hand points under my desk or while walking down the hall. 

In one case, I was escorting a little girl to class who was crying and embarrassed because she was late.  I discreetly tapped for her as we walked along and by the time we reached the classroom she was calm and smiling – as a bonus, she was greeted by her classmates with an enthusiastic “Hey, Sarah’s here!” and applause!  Go EFT!
