Hi Everyone,

Dr. Graham Temple, a dentist in England, helps his patient ease "one of the most severe pains known to man."

Introduction

Trigeminal neuralgia is characterised by excruciating, electric shock type pains, often described as one of the most severe pains known to man.  It is a disorder of the Trigeminal cranial nerve, the pain is experienced in the facial areas supplied by this nerve;

  1. the forehead, scalp and eye
  2. the cheek below the eye to the upper lip
  3. the lower lip and chin

It normally occurs on one side, and is triggered by various tactile stimuli, such as washing, smiling or eating.  Conventional treatment with anti-convulsives or/and anti-depressives, is not always very successful, and sometimes surgery is required.

Case Study

DF, a regular dental patient of mine, attended for a dental examination.  When he came in, he looked terrible, and explained that he had been suffering from Trigeminal Neuralgia, and his face on the right side was extremely sensitive to touch and he was very worried that having his teeth examined would trigger an attack.

I mentioned EFT, and as he showed some interest, I explained the basic principles and without making any promises, asked if he would like to try it.  He still had a lingering sensation around his cheek, but this was not suitable to obtain a level of intensity.  We started with a general affirmation, Even though I am getting these excruciating pains on the right side of my face and jaws…

This was followed by a full round of EFT, tapping on the left side.  DF reported that the sensation was easing, so he tapped on the right side, without provoking an attack and said that the sensation was gone.  We continued with the same affirmation, and further tapping, as I asked DF to imagine the nerves working perfectly, without any flare-ups.

I noticed that he was also tapping on other parts of his face, roughly corresponding to the areas affected by the pain.  I have had some training in Acupuncture, and decided to incorporate some additional points that are used in medical acupuncture for this condition.  These points are:

  • EX1 -  3rd eye point
  • SI19, ST7 - on the cheek in front of the ear
  • ST5, ST6 - along the angle of the lower jaw
  • ST3 - below the eye, adjacent to the lower border of the nose

Following this, we carried out his dental exam without any triggering, and he left looking a lot more comfortable than when he entered.  He was instructed to use EFT as often as possible, before, during and after any attacks.  DF returned a week later to inform me that the attacks were far less frequent, and less severe.

We did some more tapping, and I noticed that he was tapping all around the area supplied by the nerve, usually but not always hitting the standard points.  He contacted me a few weeks later to say that his condition is drastically improved, and that he will probably make an appointment to learn more about EFT.
