Using EFT to give birth without an epidural

Important Note: This article was written prior to 2010 and is now outdated. Please use my newest advancement, Optimal EFT. It is more efficient, more powerful and clearly explained in my free e-book, The Unseen Therapist™.  Best wishes, Gary

Hi Everyone,

Many women would like to give birth naturally, without drugs and the like. Fortunately, EFT can help with both the pain and the emotional aspects, as clearly conveyed in this article by Heidi DeGraffrenried. Please note that there is a difference of opinion on using EFT for pregnancy issues. Please consult physicians on all medical issues.

Hugs, Gary

Dear Gary,

I just wanted to share a fun experience with EFT as a doula (birth assistant).  I was assisting a first time mom, who was not sure about the process, but thought that she wanted to try to give birth without an epidural.

We did some visualization and EFT about five days before she went into labor for any fear or apprehension she was experiencing.  She was very responsive and seemed to feel very ready afterward.  As her labor progressed and started to change, I would surrogately tap while focusing on her.

She lagged a little bit and was very tired in the middle of active labor.  So I had her lie down and tapped her for the tiredness and the lack of progress.  I also tapped surrogately as they did the IV, because she has a hard time with needles.  She was very calm as they did the IV and her labor progressed very quickly.  She went from 7 centimeters dilation to 10 cm dilation and gave birth to a beautiful baby boy, without an epidural. She was very happy and excited about the whole experience.

I am excited about the possibilities of using EFT during labor for all kinds of issues and believe it is a wonderful tool.  I also feel an important aspect EFT could be used on during birth is the comments that are made by doctors or nurses, or family members, about the mother that she perceives to be negative.  They stick with the woman, because she is focused internally and almost in a state of hypnosis.

She tends to believe any negative statements made about her or her abilities to give birth, so being able to tap a mother and reframe those experiences during the labor or shortly after would enhance not only her feelings about this birth, but any following births as well.  What a great way to empower women, as they become mothers!  Once again another way to use this wonderful tool!

Thanks so much!  Heidi DeGraffrenried
