Breaking down a phobia into many aspects

EFt Tapping Outdated ImageNote: This is one of 3,000 articles written prior to the updated Gold Standard (Official) EFT Tapping Tutorial™. As a result, it is likely outdated. You will want to read this article by Moira Buchanan (from the United Kingdom) to get a good sense of how to break down a phobia into its many aspects. In the process, she helps collapse a very important SPECIFIC EVENT. Finally, and this is important, please notice how the testing phase went. Moira says, Over the next couple of weeks I had reports from Elaine to the effect that she had been 'unable to test the work because there just don't seem to be many birds around', but her husband sent word that 'there are as many birds as always, she just doesn't notice them any more.'

Dear Gary,

This morning I had a thank-you call from a client who, with the help of EFT, was able to take a dream trip to Venice [Italy] - and enjoy it.

Elaine came to see me a few weeks ago about her fear of birds. She longed to visit Venice, but as you may know, there are lots of birds there! Elaine had booked the trip but felt it was going to be spoiled by her bird fear.

She was compelled to escape, literally run away from, birds. For example, in an open-air restaurant she had bolted for the restroom, shaking. She was also quite likely to run blindly into a busy road just to get away from birds.

We tapped on many aspects of her fear of birds:

  • seeing them congregated
  • feeling that they would just fly up without warning
  • walking among them
  • the sense that there was no control over the direction in which they would fly [from take-off]
  • the suddenness of their movement.

At that point, Elaine remembered being around 3 years old and being taken by her father to buy some laying hens. He lifted her up to stand her inside a box of three-day old chicks with the warning that she must be very careful and stand still because, if she trod on one, she would kill it.

GC COMMENT: This is a very important SPECIFIC EVENT and can be vital to the client's healing.

We tapped on all aspects of that too:

  • feeling trapped
  • scared to move
  • feeling the chicks on her feet and against her legs
  • knowing that dad was giving her a treat and not wanting to spoil that
  • just wanting it to be over.

All of the 0-10 intensities came down to zero fairly quickly and then it was time to test the work.. So we went outside in my garden, which usually has plenty of wood pigeons. But -there was nothing but one solitary robin at the other end of the garden for the rest of the session!!! Where were those pigeons when I needed them?

Over the next couple of weeks I had reports from Elaine to the effect that she had been 'unable to test the work because there just don't seem to be many birds around', but her husband sent word that 'there are as many birds as always, she just doesn't notice them any more'.

Then came the trip to Venice, and Elaine had a wonderful time. She had two small alarms when, not only were there big flocks of birds but they were walking and flying in many directions around her and behind her. She tapped her collarbone as I had directed her and both times calmed right down. The rest of the visit was a delight and the birds bothered her not at all.

One two-hour session was all it took, including 20 minutes pretending to be 'twitchers' in the garden. (In England 'twitchers' are serious birdwatchers, not sure about the States)
