Dear Gary,

FOLLOWING IS MY EXPERIENCE OF USING EFT WITH CHILDREN..................

As a child therapist and parenting specialist for 25 years and author of Parachutes for Parents, I have come to notice that most childhood problems fall under two categories.

The first is simple child management...too little, too much, or applied with impatience and anger. In such cases, parenting skills must be strengthened, while tapping is used to release parents from such things as their reluctance to discipline or feelings of impatience and anger while doing so.

The second category includes a child's emotional reaction to some trauma he has experienced, whether it is a large or small one. In fact, I believe that most childhood problems stem from fear reactions that can be traced to one of these traumas. Such traumas can be as simple as a "stranger-awareness" program presented at school that triggers a strong fear of people. It can result from seeing a scary movie or news event or witnessing an intense argument at home that might cause a child to fear such things as monsters, robbers, or kidnapping. Or, it might involve even larger traumas such as divorce, physical or emotional illness in the family, or the death of a family member.

Any one of these traumas can produce trauma symptoms which include such things as anxious feelings and hypervigilence; obsessive worrying or repeated stress behaviors; withdrawing from social contact; fear of going to school and other places; difficulty falling or staying asleep; nightmares; impaired concentration and memory; or generalized anger and intense tantrums.

If parents will think back to what was happening around the time of the onset of the problem, they will often see a connection between the new stressful behaviors and some traumatic event. As a result, they can better identify the source of the problem and a target for tapping.

I begin by teaching parents of young children how to do the tapping with or for their child and ask that they report their results to me. If they need further assistance, I see the whole family and model how I would identify and tap on a specific fear.

I always begin my tapping protocol by tapping on the thymus or heart center with all five finger/thumb tips, while using the affirmation of "Even though I have this problem, I love myself and God loves me dearly." Then I complete the protocol, using my own variations. Once tapping is introduced to a family, I suggest that parents tap the heart center of those children who like the experience as part of tucking them into bed each night. I find this helps to keep a child's traumas processed and cleared on a daily basis, and children who have received this seem to demonstrate more relaxation and deeper resolution of their problems.

As a result of tapping on a worry about robbers, anger at a parent who has shown little interest in the child following divorce, or a school phobia following grandmother's death, many children in my practice have been released from the effects of their various traumas and the kind of insecurities and fear that could have developed into life-long problems.
