Fears And Phobias

Flying

A Fear of Flying turned out to be a metaphor for another life issue

Hi Everyone,

Here's an interesting fear of flying case from Deborah Miller of Mexico. Note how she tunes into the real issue.

Gary,

After I gave a talk at an Expo in Mexico City on EFT, a man from the audience asked me if he could have a private session to help with his fear of flying. So later that evening, in the midst of the booths, we did an EFT session. I so enjoy that EFT is effective in a private setting, a conference room filled with people or on the sidelines of booths at a conference.

He told me that he used to fly all the time to many countries and he loved traveling and flying. He enjoyed the adventure of travel, seeing new places and meeting new people. Then about 8 years ago he became afraid to fly. He would get in the seat and be afraid that someone would bomb the plane, or that it would crash. He sat there with the sweats, panic, terror, and anticipation of something horrible happening. He could hardly breathe and was anxious until the plane landed.

We started by tapping on the physical sensations of anxiety, not being able to breathe, excessive sweating. After two rounds he felt much calmer when talking about flying.

I asked him if anything happened in his life around the time the fear of flying began, like a job change or move. He said that he got married because his girlfriend got pregnant. He married her because of the child not because he loved her.

I then led him through a round of tapping with phrases such as, I used to be free to fly, now I’m married, I’m land-bound, I’m castrated, I’m not free anymore, I have responsibilities, I have a son and so on.

His eyes lit up as the tension released and recognition came in. It never occurred to him to think about the symbolism of flying and the freedom he used to have as a single man. When his girlfriend got pregnant and he married her he had symbolically been grounded at a time when he didn’t want to be. The obligations of having wife and taking care of a child were so heavy that he couldn’t fly. From that point on, he could easily talk about flying. He imagined himself in a plane, taking off, flying, being free and happy.

He and his wife were still together at the time we did the EFT session but they were discussing a divorce. He was torn because he loved his children (yes others came after the first one) but not his wife. He left feeling free of his fear of flying and with the knowledge that he was free to make the decisions that would be best for him, his wife and children.

In this example, the fear is of flying in airplanes, but many of our fears keep us from attaining our life goals, or “keep us grounded.” What is keeping you grounded? What is keeping you from flying? What fears do you have that keep you from achieving your best? Happy Tapping and then Happy Flying in all areas of your life.
