Using EFT for a terminal cancer patient's nausea

Important Note: This article was written prior to 2010 and is now outdated. Please use my newest advancement, Optimal EFT. It is more efficient, more powerful and clearly explained in my free e-book, The Unseen Therapist™.  Best wishes, Gary

Hi Everyone,

Carolyn S. Rigiero combines EFT with hypnotherapy to bring relief for the nausea caused by cancer meds and other treatments. The relief involved should be of interest to physicians so please bring this to their attention as a possible way to reduce suffering from terminal illness.

Hugs, Gary

Hi Gary,

I'm a certified clinical hypnotherapist and have been an EFT practitioner for a few years now.  As a matter of course, each client session begins with EFT, and then during hypnotherapy, I add EFT where necessary.  I just cannot imagine doing one without the other.

Recently, I was helping to care for a family member who has terminal cancer.  As you can imagine, she is in pain and is quite nauseous from all the treatment and medication she receives on a daily basis.  The nausea has been quite debilitating so I decided to use EFT to see if it would help to ameliorate it.  In order to not cause further pain, I tapped lightly on what I judged to be the sore spot, rather than rubbed.  (I used only her upper body so that the rest of her stayed warm under the covers.)  I started with this set-up phrase:

Even though this illness is causing a feeling of deep nausea, I remember what it was like when my tummy was soothed and comfortable.

On the third repetition of this statement, the nausea had become almost intolerable, and I realized that just the mention of nausea made it worse for her.  I asked her to take a few deep breaths through her mouth.  Once she settled down, I began again, using a positive set-up phrase 3 times.

How great it feels to have flawless digestion and for my tummy to feel comfortable and calm

Lightly tapping first the top of the head, (I did the tapping as she is too weak to do it for herself), the points on the face, and both collar bones individually, I used the following reminder phrases:

Round one: flawless digestion.
Round two: comfortable and calm tummy.
Round three: alternating, flawless digestion with comfortable and calm tummy.

By the time I finished, I noticed her breath had deepened and she appeared quite calm.  I continued with guided imagery using the terms I had used in the reminder phrases, with imagery of smooth digestion likened to bed sheets calmly rolling in a slight warm breeze allowing any wrinkles to become flawlessly smoothed.  Her breath deepened even more and her lips parted slightly, so I knew she was asleep.  She slept for two hours and upon awakening the nausea was gone.

I have since used this procedure at least twice more with the same results, each time changing the positive set-up phrases and the imagery to keep her interest.  I'm not sure where the idea to use a positive set-up phrase came from.  Perhaps I read about it on your website or viewed it on your videos - but I know I'll be using it more often now.

Namaste,

Carolyn S. Rigiero, CcHt, EFT-ADV
