Dear Gary,

Today I met with a man who had recently been divorced and was having a difficult time coping with his situation.  He couldn’t pay what he was ordered to pay by a court and didn’t know which way to turn.  He wanted to have the entire thing overturned and came to me to review it for him and advise him how to do so.

As I initially spoke to him, I noticed that he was very distraught and it seemed it was about more than just his divorce.  He mentioned the loss of his brother twice during our discussion.

After going over his entire situation and rendering my advice, I felt the need to help him past his obvious emotional pain.  So, I went around my desk and started tapping on his issue of depression and sadness.  I used general wording about being sad and in emotional pain and did a stream of consciousness regime that usually works like a charm.  By the way, he started out at a level of intensity of 10 on a scale of 0 to 10.

After a very full round, he remained at a 10 out of 10.  So, instead of continuing on the same generalized issue, I immediately switched to the pain of losing his brother.  He lost him when his brother hung himself at age 12.  I did an entire round on his loss and how he missed him and how he felt guilty and now he was so lonely and all alone.

Within about five minutes he was at a zero out of 10.  His eyes were closed and he said his hands and lower arms were tingling and he felt energy rushing down his arms.  I suggested that he just close his eyes for a few minutes and relax.  I explained that when we hold grief and loss so tightly in our hands and arms, when we finally release them, we feel tingling and usually want to take a nap or rest our eyes.  He agreed.

I asked him how he felt and he immediately said he felt much better.  Even though I couldn’t advise him in the fashion which he had been hoping for, he felt much better by the time he left.  It’s just amazing how life brings people to my desk time after time.

Maybe it's that “three foot” rule that I always employ in life - anyone within three feet of me hears about EFT in our first meeting and usually in less than the first 10 minutes.  By the way, I never charge my normal hourly rate for doing EFT with clients.  I always “stop the clock” as I do EFT and then go back to wherever we were in our interview.

Hope this helps a few of those out there to remember to always go back to the basics of keeping it simple and specific.

All my best to you,

Ted
