Hi Everyone,

I find this case fascinating because of the unusual way that tinnitus faded. The author, Diane von der Weid from Switzerland, uses intuition and displays useful metaphors throughout 4 sessions and says, "By the end of our fourth session together, Mark's tinnitus was gone. Mark called me last week to work on some performance issues; he said he's been free from his tinnitus since then - it's been nine months." Please consult physicians on all medical issues.

Hugs, Gary

Hi Gary,

Like many EFT'ers I have had my share of amazing experiences with EFT, but you will probably agree that this one is quite unique.

"Mark" came to see me for a tinnitus that he had had continuously for seven years. He described it as a "high-pitched hissing" in his ears, which reduced his capacity to focus on things, affecting thereby his work and daily life. Over all those years he had seen a number of physicians and specialists, and had tried different sorts of therapies but all with little or no relief. It was only after doing several sessions of sophrology that he eventually felt some improvements, but these improvements didn't last for long; his tinnitus was fully back within a week after the end of the treatment.

Marks' sister is one of my clients and she advised him to come see me for EFT. Right from the beginning of the session Mark said he couldn't link his tinnitus to any particular event or emotion; so we started the session simply by tapping on his present strain, fatigue, and stress - all generated by this constant sound in his ears. After just a couple of rounds it became easy for him to bridge it up to the more specific feelings - the true cause of "strain, fatigue and stress": it was all about "hearing people". But he still couldn't link it to any specific event, feeling, or emotion at this point, so we did EFT on a few different aspects such as "hearing people makes me groggy", and so on, zeroing down on each of those.

Still no specific event, feeling, or emotion. Nothing. Just this constant tinnitus. Now strain and tension were coming back, and Mark still described his tinnitus as a 'high-pitched hissing'. Yet something had changed; it was now not only "in" his ears, but also "around" them! Suddenly, I felt very strongly his tinnitus was 'Protecting him', I could actually "see" a helmet on his head.

So I asked Mark if he would give me a metaphor for his tinnitus. He said, "I have a helmet on my head, it presses down on my skull and part of the nape of my neck". I asked him to describe it further; in his metaphor he described a beautiful gold helmet with gems inserted, a bit like the ones chief warriors wore in ancient times. We tapped on different aspects of his helmet, their physical and emotional meaning.

Between each round of tapping we stopped and assessed his tinnitus, he reported variations occurring in the high-pitched hissing : the hissing was starting to undulate, becoming less linear, oscillating between high notes and lower ones. The pressure on his skull and at the back of his neck was weakening, and he could feel the strain and tension fading. His metaphor was changing as well, as his helmet was turning into a smaller and more simple one (no more gold, no more gems.).

Then, unexpectedly, there was a distinct and loud "crack!". We both stopped and stared at each other in total stupor. After a moment, Mark said in a very faint voice: "The bone behind my ears just cracked". This crack had been so loud, that for a second I caught myself believing that "the bone behind his ears" had cracked for real, and I imagined with great horror an inch wide crack running along his skull. I asked Mark how he felt - he said : "Stunned". He then added : "the helmet on my head is now much less present, and the pressure going right down to the nape of my neck is diminished by half". It was time to close the session, and he reported his tinnitus had lost a third of its intensity.

We did another three sessions for his tinnitus, each time Mark reported lasting positive changes. On the second session we tapped a little more for his metaphor of the helmet, which actually was no more a metal helmet, but had turned into a glass one. We tapped until he was totally free of it. He then was able to identify some specific events, recalling nasty things his mother used to tell him when he was a child.

On the third and fourth sessions, as we were doing EFT on specific childhood events, we experienced the cracks again. Just as distinct and loud as the one on the first session. Just as stunning. I don't know where these came from - and probably never will - but each time after one of those Mark reported an immediate improvement. By the end of our fourth session together, Mark's tinnitus was gone.

Mark called me last week to work on some performance issues; he said he's been free from his tinnitus since then - it's been nine months.

I will never thank you enough for this wonderful tool !

With warmest wishes,

Diane von der Weid
