Fears And Phobias

Fear of riding on horseback disappears - but only after getting to the core issue

Hi Everyone,

This article by Anne Medd of the UK beautifully illustrates how quality detective work can turn a mediocre result into a first class healing. Note how the real issue did not, at first glance, seem to have anything to do with her client's reported problem.

Hugs, Gary

'Jane' asked for help because for no apparent reason she had suddenly started to feel fearful and anxious about riding her horse, 'Del Boy'.  They have been together for over eleven years, and previously enjoyed a happy partnership while competing and riding out in the countryside, both alone and with friends.  Yet Jane had become really frightened to ride anywhere with a drop on one or both sides of a track.  (In the UK some of the most enjoyable off road rides are on disused railway tracks which have been converted to trails, so they often have embankments)

The mere thought of having to ride where there is a drop gave Jane 'butterflies in her tummy' at an intensity level of 10 out of 10.  She felt that she no longer trusted Del Boy, that he was not listening to her instructions, and that he might start to play up and spin round, and go over the edge.

This had never happened in fact, and he is normally very well behaved.  She could not think of any occasion when he had really frightened her over the years and that made her sudden, intense fear even more of a puzzle.  We tapped on her general feeling of anxiety, and then on:

Even though Del Boy goes into 'horse mode' and doesn't listen to me…  Even though I don't trust him because of his occasional bad behaviour..

Jane reported that she felt better and that the butterflies had gone.  A few days later she phoned to say that something had come into her mind that she had completely forgotten.

She remembered there had been an incident when Del Boy was young and nervous, and they were on a narrow track with a steep drop.  A Landrover needed to pass, and Del Boy's hind legs were right on the edge of the drop in order to make enough room.  The thought of that time brought up fearful feelings of 10 out of 10.  We tapped for:

Even though I was terrified on that narrow track when the Land rover came...  Even though I still have butterflies in my tummy when I remember that time...

The butterflies were cleared to 0 out of 10, and Jane felt more confident, but did not have an opportunity to test her reactions, before another memory surfaced. A few days later, she remembered a time when Del Boy was terrified by a Highland cow that had been sleeping and suddenly got to its feet.  We tapped on and cleared that, but, when I asked her to imagine riding on the track again, the fear was back to 10 to of 10 and she felt it in the solar plexus.

"I don't want to do it," she said, and amazed tears started to come into her eyes.  "It's my father.  Why am I thinking about him?  He is long dead.  I'm frightened about going past that gap (in the bushes at the sides of the track) because I feel exposed and vulnerable.  There is no support - just like when I was growing up.  He was never there to help, protect or advise me.  He was always off, and there was never any money for us, even though he earned a good salary and was highly esteemed in the community.  He never loved or wanted us, and just lived his own separate life."

The "Aha" moment; we tapped on:

Even though my father was never there for me…

Even though I felt unsupported by my father and there was a gap in my life...

Even though I still feel hurt by my father, I now choose to let those feelings go...

Even though he upset my life when I was in my teens, I'm damned if he is going to do it now...

Even though I felt unprotected riding past that gap, I now choose to feel calm and relaxed.

Jane, a feisty lady, was no longer feeling anxious, but angry at her father.  She was not ready to forgive him, yet, for years of neglect, but felt altogether much calmer and at peace.  When asked to imagine riding past the problem 'gap' there was no longer any emotional charge, and she has now ridden there in reality without any difficulties at all.

Once again, Jane is fully enjoying riding out and competing.
