Hi Everyone,

Our voices have great influence in our relationships with other people. For example, a mellow, relaxing voice creates a much different impression than a high, screeching one. Fortunately, we have voice coach Andrea Elisabeth Fultz from Germany to give us her EFT insights on this issue.

Hugs, Gary

By Andrea Elisabeth Fultz

Hi Gary,

As a voice teacher I have clients who come to me for their singing voice, and also for their speaking voice. I'm finding that a growing number of my clients need a more holistic approach to their voices than just a technical/musical one.

When I teach voice technique, if my clients have an underlying emotional issue, they simply are not able to stay with a balanced voice. Something in their system makes them "forget" or "disables" them from using their full voice after the lesson.

What the body (voice) can do is not necessarily what the mind or the emotions want to do and are able to handle. So, when a client comes home, her body has learned how to produce those sounds but the rest of her system may not at all be ready to go there yet. And here is where it's essential to look for the voice issue's emotional cause.

I'm so happy that with the help of EFT it's possible to get lasting results, because we get to the underlying "real" issue - the voice issue itself is only the symptom! Most of the time, the voice issues start in childhood and often the clients know exactly who e.g. "forbid them to speak their mind", "threatened them not to show themselves as so strong (with such a strong voice)" etc.

My client Susan is a good example of this. She is a very successful business woman in her mid-40s who trains business leaders. However, all her life she had been using a "mousy", very high and breathy speaking voice. So, she came to me with the goal of finding her own natural, relaxed, powerful way of using her speaking voice. She said: "My speaking voice is essential for my work."

So, in our first lesson, I technically showed Susan how to use her voice in a full and relaxed way - it worked well. In fact, I was very surprised (and a bit shocked) when she started speaking in a powerful alto voice. I gave Susan voice homework to do.

A week later, I saw Susan again and she reported that she hadn't been able to repeat the exercises properly at home. Right after our first lesson, she even got a severe headache. This, of course, was a clear sign that there was huge inner resistance going on!

So, in our second lesson, we resolved several issues with EFT that were related to Susan's voice such as her Mom's seemingly overpowering destructive behavior and Susan's fear of losing her husband when using her strong voice. We basically worked on her psychological reversals around the voice issue, freeing Susan's system of reasons why she shouldn't show her full power and her full voice.

In this second lesson, we also worked some more on vocal technique: I had her stand at a blackboard pretending I was a client of hers and she spoke to me (using voice exercises and her proper, full speaking voice) explaining a business plan. Whenever Susan felt there was another emotional issue coming up, such as the shame of sounding so strong, we tapped for this issue. Her shame for sounding so strong was at an 8 on a scale of 0 to 10, so we tapped:

Even though I sound so strong and I feel so ashamed, because this sounds silly to me...
Even though I feel so ashamed for sounding so big and I am not allowed to sound so strong, it may hurt my Mom's feelings, I deeply and completely accept myself and this part of my voice.
Even though I feel so silly with this big voice, and it might be more secure to sound small, plus I feel so ashamed, I deeply and completely accept myself and all facets of my voice.

My voice sounds so strong,
That's not me,
I feel so silly,
I feel so ashamed,
I sound so strong,
I'm not used to this sound,
This is silly,
Who am I to want to sound so big?
I'm not allowed to sound so strong,
And I feel ashamed,
I may hurt Mom,
I can't sound so strong,
It may make her feel small,
And it's just too silly

Her shame subsided and we worked on all following issues that came up during the little lecture Susan held while speaking in a balanced, full way.

GC COMMENT: In the tapping issues above, the issue of "I may hurt Mom" is a likely candidate for going deeper by getting to a specific event behind this problem.

Susan reported that, after the second lesson, without even trying, her voice had shifted to a lower much more natural sound. Friends of hers had also noticed it. Because we had tapped for her acceptance of her power and powerful voice, it also became much easier for Barbara to get to a balanced, full voice by herself - without even trying to manipulate her voice.

I think EFT is a great help for supporting technical developments/ learning processes on an emotional level, helping to overcome the inner emotional resistances that can slow down or stop these processes.

Thank you so much for this wonderful tool!

Andrea Elisabeth
