Hi Everyone,

Here's a fabulous account by Stephen Ladd who helps his client improve his golf game and, as a side benefit, he quits smoking and substantially reduces his sugar intake. This humorous case will likely stick in your memory bank.

Hugs, Gary

Dear Gary,

I thought that you and the rest of the EFT community might find this case interesting.

I was working with a golfer/smoker who I will call “Winston”, simply because smoking humor is quite rare.

We had three sessions over the course of one month, two in my office and one “playing lesson” at his country club.  We only worked on his golf game (I did not know he was a smoker).  In particular, we worked on his lack of confidence in his chipping and putting ability.  It seemed to boil down to a belief (drilled into him by several swing coaches) that it took a great deal of time and practice to get good at the “short game”.

Winston is a busy CEO and finds it difficult to make time to play enough golf, not to mention hours of practice on the putting green.  So he felt doomed to never be able to put in enough time to improve in this area.

We approached these limiting beliefs from several angles, all of which have been covered in depth by practitioners on this website who are far more skilled than I am.  Anyway, the results were quite good.  Winston called two weeks later to report that he shot his best score ever on his home course, and then 3 days later beat that score by 2 strokes!  He stated that it was saving shots around the green that made all the difference.

But here is where it really gets interesting…  He called about 10 days later – the short conversation is transcribed below:

Winston:  Coach Stephen, I just had to call and tell you something.  You are not going to believe this.

Stephen:  You’d be surprised at how liberal I am these days with what I will believe.

W:  Well … as you know, my golf has improved.  But the really weird thing is that I just realized that I haven’t had a cigarette in 13 days!

S:  You know what?  I haven’t either … not exactly worthy of CNN, now is it?

W:  (laughing) Come on, I’m a smoker, been one for 20 years … at least 8-10 a day.  But this is so crazy; I think I just forgot to smoke.  I didn’t have any cravings, and I just forgot about it.

S:  That is a bit odd.  Did you forget anything else?

W:  What do you mean?

S:  Like did you forget to eat?

W:  (laughing) Of course not.  But now that you mention it, I’ve had very little sugar in the last two weeks, which is normally another one of my weaknesses.  I think you are really onto something more than just golf here.  Can I set up another appointment?

S:  Sure, but maybe you shouldn’t tap so much, as you may forget about it and stand me up!

W:  (laughing) You have got to be the strangest coach on the planet.

S:  Let’s hope so…

Best,

Stephen Ladd
